On this and every Veterans’ Day, my heart swells with gratitude for all who have served. Having grown up in a large military family, my single father raised me and my siblings. Dad enlisted in the Air Force when he was just 17 years old and participated in the Berlin Airlift at the end of WWII. He also saw combat during the Korean War.
As we kids practiced being his little soldiers, Dad instilled in us the value of responsibility to each other, our community, and our family. He inspired each of us to aim high. All the while, he lived wondering if or when he would be deployed to Vietnam.
My father may not necessarily be your picture of a military hero, but to me and my 6 brothers and sisters – all of whom have served – he was a champion in every sense of the word.
On this Veterans’ Day, I offer my most sincere thanks to those who have served and those who are currently serving in the military. It is you – united by valor – who bring hope for the future of our country.
May we never forget the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have fortified our freedoms and continue to protect lives around the world.
With heartfelt appreciation,
